Deer Hunting Secrets
Discover The Closely Guarded True Secrets Of Master Deer Hunters.
Hunting dogs are an important part of any hunting expedition. Each breed has its own benefit and detriment. Some hunting dogs have higher risks of poor health, while others are too demanding. Hunting dogs also vary in their need for exercise, the type of hunting they excel in, and their physical limitations. It is essential that the legs of these dogs are straight with slight angles in the rear legs. Below is a list and a brief overview of the most common hunting dogs:
Labrador Retrievers
Commonly referred to as Labs, these are one of the most popular hunting dogs. They continually rank among the top sporting dogs according to the AKC. Labs were originally from Newfoundland, and were called St. John's Newfoundland. Labs are working dogs with higher energy levels. They are also playful, affectionate, and non-aggressive. They can be social with children, pets and visitors, but can also make a good watchdog. Labs can be afflicted with CHD, gastric torsion, retinal dysplasia/skeletal dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, and elbow dysplasia. Minor ailments include cataracts, OCD, CPRA, pyotraumatic dermatitis. Labs often are diagnosed with diabetes, entropion, and distichiasis. They have a 10-12 year life span and are a favorite among those selecting a hunting dog (or a dog for the home, as well).
German Short-haired Pointer
Also called the German Short-haired Pointing Dog or Deutsch Kurzhaar. This hunting dog requires an average amount of training before it is ready for a hunt. The life span is 10 to 12 years. It is a great breed for a hunting dog because it needs plenty of exercise, both mentally and physically. Lymph edema is the primary health concern. Other lesser issues include CHD, entropion, gastric torsion, vWD, pannus, and OCD. As a puppy, testing should be completed to ensure that the hips and eyes are healthy and blood work should be done as well.
Brittany
One of the oldest breeds, the Brittany is a mix between small land spaniels and an English Settler. It ranks at 33 for the AKC and is a member of the sporting group. It is great hunting dog because it has long legs, require allot of exercise and are very intelligent - it means they can be trained as a hunting dog easily. CHD is the only major health issue. Minor issues include epilepsy and lipfold pyoderma. In addition, these hunting dogs are friendly, affectionate and great watchdogs.
English Pointers
English Pointers have been around since the 17th century. These hunting dogs are cooperative with high levels of energy. They require much exercise, are playful and affectionate. Although they are used oftentimes as hunting dogs, they are also great companions and watchdogs. Entropion is the only major health concern, with CHD as a lesser issue. As with many hunting dog breeds, the pointer should be tested for the hips and eyes.
Hopefully this quick overview of hunting dogs will help you narrow down your choices and select the perfect dog for you and your family.
