As with any sport that incorporates speed, outdoor obstacles, and thrills, mountain biking is a potentially dangerous sport. Some mountain biking enthusiasts believe they are invincible and they foolishly shun mountain bike accessories that could prevent injury or death (although a few bumps and scrapes are unavoidable). Below is a list of mountain bike accessories that individuals of any skill level should have when riding.

Bike helmet

Of all the mountain bike accessories, the bike helmet is the most important. In fact, the bike helmet should not be considered a mountain bike accessory, but a requirement for any rider. Despite the level of skill or experience, every mountain biker will tumble, fall or be thrown from his bike. The helmet is the only mountain bike accessory that will save the riders head from serious injury or even death. Modern helmets are lightweight, streamlined and stylish. The proper fit is essential for the helmet to work to its fullest ability.

Protective eyewear

Protective eyewear, such as goggles or shields are necessary mountain bike accessories. Protective eyewear will prevent rocks, dirt, bugs, branches or other debris from damaging your eyes as you speed downhill. All other mountain bike accessories are secondary to a good helmet and eye protection.

Trail repair kit

Once you hit the mountain bike trails a good repair kit is an essential among mountain bike accessories. Sharp rocks, branches and other objects may reek havoc on your bike tires. In the case of a flat, only a trail repair kit will save you from becoming stranded and pushing your bike back to your starting place. Most repair kits can be stored under the seat of your bike. The key to the repair kit, different from other mountain bike accessories, is that you must know how to use the tools or else it is worthless to you.

Gloves

Gloves provide a bit of comfort to your hands while riding. Compared to other mountain bike accessories, gloves may be considered a luxury. However, they will prevent your hands from slipping off the handle bars, lower the chance of harsh cuts to your hands in the case of a fall, and lighten the tight grip that many people use when riding under extreme conditions.

Hydration system

On a basic level, each mountain bike rider should carry a water bottle with him. However, another useful too among mountain bike accessories is the hydration system. Typically, the hydration system is a plastic bladder that is carried in a small, lightweight backpack. Most hydration systems will hold plenty of water for a nice, long ride.

Shoes

As with any extreme sport, there are shoes made specifically for mountain bike riding. This mountain bike accessory is comfortable, yet hardy for rough terrain. Sometimes the shoes come with specific soles that are for pedals where you can clip into a device and avoid the bulky cage around your shoe. Although as accessories go, proper shoes are among the mountain bike accessories that can make a ride a little bit more comfortable.

Shorts

Without padded shorts, biking of any type would be a pain...literally. Padded shorts provide comfort where it matters most. Add padded shorts to a seat cover that is filled with gel and you have a winning combination in mountain bike accessories.
