When turkey hunting, below are a few common rules and points of etiquette:

  • Keep 300 feet from the turkey. This will prevent the turkey from sensing the hunter. But, it will also prevent another hunter, who is also turkey hunting, from mistaking the hunter as a second turkey.

  • Select a cover that will hide the entire body. Turkey hunting covers can be as basic as a tree or a stand, or more complex.

  • Do not block your vision when turkey hunting. It is important to be able to see the terrain in all directions.

  • When turkey hunting, limit your movement. Let the turkey approach you. Simply set up in an area where turkeys will frequent and wait.

  • Camouflage is beneficial but not foolproof. But, be wise when choosing your colors for your turkey hunting trip. Avoid wearing red, blue and white, as you could be mistaken for a turkey head, which could prove tragic.

  • You must see the turkey before you take a shot. If you simply hear the turkey call, do not shoot. It could be another hunter using a call to lure a turkey.

  • If you come across another hunter who is turkey hunting, give him space. And certainly do not shoot or attempt to lure a turkey that is being lured by another hunter.

  • Research and follow the rules for turkey hunting in your state. Not only to turkey hunting rules vary from state to state, but they also can vary depending on whether you are hunting on state, federal or private lands.

In sum, turkey hunting is an exciting sport. By following the rules, you can have a great time, build amazing memories and hopefully catch a nice, big turkey.
